Basic SEO of a New Website
We’ve talked about how to do keyword research and we’ve talked about how to complete market research, now it’s time to talk about what we do with all those keywords and research we’ve done. If you read my 3 part series on how to properly optimize your title tag, meta description and keyword tags then your well on your way to optimizing a page fully.
I’ve been working on a site www.diacrm.com for the past week and have just finished the basics of on site SEO for the site. When I say basic, I mean super basic lol. A lot of times when you optimize a website for a client you don’t have a lot of room to make changes. Some times you can only optimize certain aspects of the website and that’s all you can do. That’s what happened in this situation with DIA CRM.
Breakdown of Website
DIA CRM is a company that offers customer relationship management services to small businesses. Their website is built off of a CMS (content management system) provided by Group 5 Web. They offer a very easy to use SEO friendly CMS so their clients can easily upload and add new content. They asked me if i could optimized the website without changing the look and feel of the site.
Breakdown of basic optimization
When i start to optimize a site i take each page and list the url in an excel spread sheet. (You’ll find life much easier if you stay organized) then I make columns next to the url’s that i have listed vertically labeled title, description, H1, call to action and keyword tag. then i start to optimize each page without even touching the html or CMS of the site.
Once that is complete I go to town copying and pasting each of the fields I have created into the appropriate places on the website. In this case it was made easy since Group 5 Web’s CMS is set up for basic SEO implementation. Each page had it’s own target keyword or phrase and with in that page each of the elements I created had some variation of the keyword in them. After the main elements I listed above were optimized I moved on to the content. I analyzed the content, took a look at what the competition was saying and then, like a surgeon created new optimized content for each page. I made sure to not over do it with the keywords either. It’s important to keep a 2% – 4% keyword ratio in copy.
After finishing up the copy I noticed there was no bottom navigation and that some of the sites navigation was graphic and some of it was text. It’s important to always have a text navigation on every page of your site. This makes it not only easy for the search engine spiders to get to every page, it also allows mobile users that cannot download images to their phones still be able to navigate your site.
Take a look at DIA’s website and pay attention to the meta tags, H1’s, title tags and calls to action. View the source and see for yourself how it was all put together. I’m off to my next project. I hope this helped:)
